FASHIONISTA THOUGHT: Blowing in the Wind??? How to avoid embarrassment...

Hey Fashionistas!

You are at home watching the news when you hear that the weather is going to be really nice but a little breezy. You look outside and see the sun shining so brighlty that you can't resist going out and getting some fresh air. You find that it is warm enough outside to leave the house without a jacket and it really feels good!

Your choice of clothig is a really cute spring dress that you got from Forever 21 and it is light and airy. The sun that is dancing on your shoulders is exciting as you look forward to what the summer has to offer, and with that feeling you decide not to get in the car and drive, but rather to take a walk.

As you are walking through your neighborhood or on the beach or wherever you decide to enjoy that beautiful sun and crisp morning air, you feel a subtle breeze... this is awesome! But then it happens....
Nothing can be worse then putting your fancy little undergarments on display to all of those that are passing you! Do you see the horror in the woman's face above??? Point made!!!

Well, here are a few tips that will help you avoid those embarrassing moments if you are not one that cares to put the "pretties" on display and possibly cause a 10 car pile-up!  You naughty lil ladies!
  1. Never wear light clothing in windy weather. That was simple enough!
  2. Wear a pair of leggings/tights underneath your dress. A really cool and flattering way to avoid showing the undies. You can find various colors and patterns that can be very flattering to your dress.
  3. Wear a pair of biking shorts underneath your dress. If you want those pretty legs to be seen. The close fit will make them almost invisible and the blow up won't cause a traffic accident.
  4. Wear a cardigan. A nice long and thin cardigan can help weigh down the fabric and keep your little skirt tamed.
  5. Make your skirt a bubble. The elastic around the rim of the skirt will keep it from blowing up.

Do you know any ways to keep a skirt or dress from blowing in the wind? How about how to avoid the embarrassment? Share your thoughts!!!

IN THE MIND OF A TEENAGE FASHIONISTA- My award-winning experience!

Hey Fashionistas!

On March 3, 2012, I was honored at The One Night Only Gala that celebrated the beginning of the 17…Days of Fashion as an official non-profit organization. I was honored with some of the hardest working women in the city of brotherly love:  Kharisma McIlwaine of CW Philly, Jenice Armstrong, Journalist for Philadelphia Daily Newspaper, Lori Wilson, Anchorwoman of NBC 10, Sharon Phillips Waxman, President of SPW Production, and Julie Wilch, Fashion Event Coordinator (congratulations ladies!).

The One Night Only Gala was held at a very soft lit venue, The View, with round tables, candles, and an ice sculpture. It was beautiful! To add to the beauty of the venue, my favorite moment about the night (along with the award) was being able to spend it with my dad, Aalim Elitou! My dad escorted me for the night and we had an awesome time. It was great to have my Dad there with me sharing such a wonderful experience. Here is a picture of us together!
I would like to thank my parents for being an awesome influence on me and always guiding me in the right direction; staying on our path of righteousness. I would like to thank my little sisters who are always encouraging me to be a great role model. Also, my family who is always in my corner. And of course you, all of my supporters! I love you all! And of course I would like to thank the 17…Days of Fashion and Anthony Henderson for acknowledging my work. Thank you!

Here is a picture of me holding my award. The award states, “Awarded of excellence is presented to Tweety Elitou for your demonstration as a Fashion Blogger and Editor within the fashion community and your contribution to 17…days of fashion given on this 3rd day of March 2012.”

I am so honored to be appreciated for my work and I hope that I will be able to influence other youth to be the best they can be and work towards their dreams!

So On to the Fashion Side of It All!
I love the work of my stylist, Giovanni. I was considered one of the most stylish people of the evening.

The hat that I was wearing was made by the wonderful hat creator, Phenise of Plain Elain. She had lest than a week to make it and she did a fab job!
Fashionably out,
Tweety Elitou

BOOK REVIEW: The Diva Girl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect by Cheryl Wadlington!!!

The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect is a book that is long overdue!

When I look in the dictionary, I know that the meaning of a diva is a lead female singer, so when I think of a diva, I think of great women like Leotyne Price and Marian Anderson. These are great women and strong women that are worthy of their many accolades… They earned it.

Recently, we know divas to be women like Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey because they are known as women that are not only singers but they are very demanding of their needs of comfort before they step on stage. It is said that Jennifer Lopez is known to ask for her own trailer that is completely white and that she must have a new toilet seat in her bathroom!

Further meaning of a Diva is a woman that is filled with confidence and is very demanding and can be very feisty and downright nasty if she doesn’t get what she wants. These are the women that the media loves to hate. Naomi Campbell is the queen of the new “Diva” as she is known to be very hostile and violent with her assistants and those that she believes are standing in her way. Let us not forget the infamous rapper, Foxxy Brown who is known to be the same thing.

The latest definition of a diva comes from none other than Beyonce who says that, “a diva is the female version of a hustler.” And while most may agree with all of the many definitions, after reading The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect, you will love the newest meaning of the word.

Cheryl Ann Wadlington wants young women to help her in defining the new DivaGirl as a young woman that gets what she wants from her can-do attitude and the hard and good work that she puts into making it happen. She also says that a DivaGirl is someone that values her reputation. It is always important that you keep your reputation pristine because you never know who you are going to meet and what they will learn about you. Cheryl Ann also states that a DivaGirl is admired and admiration comes from what you do that most people can appreciate.

The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect gives you a brief inside look into the life of the well-known fashion consultant, Cheryl Ann Wadlington and what she learned as a teen. She had many experiences in the fashion world to help shape her into the woman that she is today, but there was no education like the one that she got from her parents and her family. As the youngest child, she was spoiled but she was also disciplined, which led to a divalicious life. And that is what the DivaGirl’s Guide is all about.

The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect gives great tips for young women to follow throughout life that will help her become the great woman that she is expected to be! Some of the best chapters of the book are:

Rock Ya Body!- This chapter speak about the importance of good health. Every girl, especially a DivaGirl, should be exercising. She explains that when young women exercise and eat healthy, the long term benefits show as we get older. She also talks about why we as young women should not even bother with crash diets that could lead to anorexia and bulimia.

Act Like You Know- In this chapter, Cheryl Ann discusses how young women should conduct themselves. From etiquette to good home-training; from good table manners to how to conduct yourself at an event, this all the information that a young woman needs in order to feel fearless in fabulous when out and about.

Style Star- Now this chapter is a chapter after every stylists heart!  It is all about your body type; to know what type of clothing you are wearing; and where certain clothing is appropriate and not so much! She even touched on my favorite topic, THE PROM!!! Yes, the prom is definitely a date in which you want to look your very best and no one knows that better than this fashion consultant! (Oh! And definitely me! www.yhcpromcountdown.onsugar.com)

Overall, the book is fun, fresh and fabulous and every girl should read it to be the best DivaGirl that they can be!

MY SEWING REALITY: Week One- Sewing a Infinity Scarf!

Hey Fashionistas!

I am proud to say that I finished my first sewing project at the Red House, and I finished it in a matter of minutes (fashionable, neat, and swift is in!)! I could not wait to take a picture and share it all with you!
So what was the project? Well, something that I probably won't be wearing until the winter, lol! I made my own infinity scarf (a.k.a eternity scarf, circle scarf or tube scarf) and I love it! My infinity scarf is super warm and comfortable making for a perfect item to have for cold winter days.

The first thing I had to do was pick two peices of fabric which I would have to cut both into 20 inches each (folded). I choose a turquoise lace material and paired it with a bright orange fabric with a slight give (slightly stretchy).

Next, I had to sew the two fabrics (seperately) into tubes.
Lastly, I had to place the two now tube fabrics into each other and pin them together with both the tubes seams touching and sew the the fabrics together (flipped inside out). And begin sewing them all together!

Even my little sister, Pumpkin got a class on how to make a fashionable clutch. Check out her work below!
Isn't it just beautiful??? I loved her color coordination!

"I had a very great time today. I loved my bag!!! Ms. Dahlia showed me a lot of great techniques for how to gather my fabric for the front of the bag!" says Pumpkin.

Well, that was a little inside of what I have been working on in my "Sewing Reality". Let me know what you think! :)
